Good move? Bad move? Smart move?

Quote:
Huckabee skipping CPAC

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) is skipping the Conservative Political Action Conference, a high-profile cattle call for potential GOP presidential hopefuls.

Huckabee will be in early primary state South Carolina and Tennessee Thursday and Friday, bypassing an event that every other likely Republican presidential candidate plans to attend.

The decision has been expected for days, as Huckabee wasn't on early speaker lineup lists, but Huckabee's team made it official today when a spokeswoman released a schedule that included stops in the southern states but not D.C.

The move is a bit of a surprise, given how much media attention the event draws. But Huckabee might be calculating that he's better off wooing voters in South Carolina, a state he fell just short in during his 2008 presidential run, and shoring up influential religious conservatives at the National Religious Broadcasters Convention in Tennessee on Thursday.

Huckabee spoke at CPAC last year but has, at times, been critical of the event, accusing it of being a "pay-for-play" event after skipping it in 2010.

"Don't fight a battle if you don't gain anything by winning."

Very good move.

CPAC is no longer worthy of support and its straw poll has proven to be unpredictive and a "pay for play" scheme.

Giving CPAC attention just subjects Huckabee to being "rejected" by "real conservatives" as defined by the factions that have taken over CPAC. These factions are overwhelmingly the youthful, ivy league, urbane, socially liberal, libertarian, monied, scions of the GOP establishment. That is neither a crowd with the authority to determine who is best for the GOP nor the wisdom.

There have been fights to take back CPAC (especially in 2011) but the game aint worth the candle.

Huckabee seems to be content to hold back and let the rabbits run (like Walker's "surge" which is a sugar high) and wait for his move. He is clearly building his contributor base and recruiting his alternative media allies to run independently from those most of the "kingmakers" think about.

So...option one: a room full of college trust-baby libertarians (not all mind you, just the ones who think they run things) and former Romney backers.

OR

A room full of people who control microphones to tens of millions of evangelicals.

BTW: Scott Walker spoke Monday night as the Nashville NRB convention was just getting underway. Huck speaks Thursday on the final night (that is usually thought of a a "keynote" folks. Fine. It will be much better to take on the leading competition in a friendly venue with a more one on one comparison.

It also looks like Huck is starting to lose a little weight. Very good.

The only thing worth mentioning that came out of CPAC in the last decade or so was Romney suspending his campaign in '08. And we know who's going to win the straw poll (Paul)... which no one will care about after a few days.

Still... I wouldn't mind if we had the organization clout to give Huckabee a victory in that straw poll. We would just have to find about 900 supporters willing to cough up the travel and ticket costs.
