Before Dem walkout, GOP proposed tax revenue

Democrats suspended Supercommittee negotiations even though Republicans offered to change the proposal of Sen. Patrick Toomey, R-Penn., to increase the amount by which they would raise tax revenue, a Republican congressional aide familiar with this week's negotiations told The Washington Examiner.

"It's not like [the Democrats] stormed out or anything like that, but, they basically said, 'we appreciate the effort, but this isn't working; we should take some time apart,'" the aide said. "They were talking about pushing up that revenue number so that Democrats would be more comfortable with it" as of Monday evening, the aide added. "They were making progress and then 24 hours later it was just like [the Democrats said], 'forget it -- you go back to your side and we'll go back to our side.'" The aide claimed not to know the catalyst for the Democrats' decision to suspend the negotiations.

That Republican willingness to compromise on tax revenue would seem to contradict Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who predicted Monday morning that Republican unwillingness to raise taxes would prevent the Supercommittee from reaching an agreement.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., told Sean Hannity today that "the Democrats have walked away from the table and they are refusing to talk to the Republicans about a deal." Paul added that he believes "the President's calculation here is that it helps his campaign not to have a [Supercommittee] deal."
