Something will ALWAYS beat nothing.

Post election polls (as well as exit polls in the Battleground states) indicate that much of the hard won ground that had been gained in elevating the value of all life was lost since just this Summer.

Rassmussen has out today a poll indicating Pro-Choice sentiment is at an all time high in his polling at 54% self-identified "Pro-Choice" when given only two options (Pro-Life was at 38%).

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_ ... 8_pro_life

Gallup found as recently as May, 2012 poll that the Pro-Life position was within one point of an all-time high (51%) and Pro-Choice was at an all time low of 41%.

Between these two polls (and there are others that confirm the sad fact) we see a clear reversal.

So what happened to change so many minds about such a fundamental moral question in six months? Here are my thoughts.

1.) No attractive, or even competent, voice was on the stage after May articulating the Pro-life message.

2.) The voices that remained, who were poor to disasterous deliverers of the message, were intentionally targeted and amplified as the voice of the Pro-life argument by the Obama team and a willing press-corps (including FOX) into "crazy uncles."

3.) The Romney campaign made the issue itself the equivalent of the "crazy uncle" as it tried to hide him in the basement and offered no real defense of Life. It is not that hard to do. You separate the personality from the issue NOT the issue from your candidate. Abolitionist John Brown was certainly a zealot and extreme, but that did not alter the moral injustice of slavery. The Romney tactic of separation NEVER works (unless you have a willing press to help you). There are NO basements in the age of media if your opponent wishes to showcase the "crazy uncles."

4.) Obama and the Democrats gave a full throated defense of their position on abortion rights set against the silence of Romney. This allowed them to "frame" the issue unapposed and tear the pro-life...excuse me...it is once again in the public mind - "anti-choice" - strawman to pieces. Obama lead and by doing so emboldened the pro-choice core of the Democrats to action. They then made their argument and persuaded or brow-beat more folks into their camp.

5.) With no Pro-life defender in the "main event" the Pro-life movement lost direction and grew discouraged. They could not fully rally to Romney and subsequently were dispirited in even rallying to their cause.

The good news in this debacle, if there is any, is that the rapid swing of the pendulum indicates just how persuadable folks actually are on this deeply troublesome question of abortion. We have seen that the issue was not "settled" by Roe. It was not "settled" when the Pro-life movement finally broke the 50% barrier. It is not "settled" by this reversal. The issue is not "settled" because the issue itself is very unsettling.

But that is why it must be engaged.

Romney cost conservatives and their issues, especially social ones, A LOT across the US on Nov. 6th. He actually did more damage to them then I ever thought he would. Hats off to Willard Mitchell Romney and good riddance. May I never see him on the political stage again or have a voice in anything. And that goes to the whole establishment wing of the party also.

The only good news out of this is that sometimes the walls have to come caving in before we can emerge from the rubble refined. God corrects his children when he knows they can do a whole lot better.

The same scenario of what Doc laid out above is what also cost the fate of 4 marriage amendments on Nov. 6. You can argue it's a culture shift and those were blue states but can it really happen that fast when marriage has never lost on the ballot and the most recent huge victory was just a short time ago in NC? Also, a marriage amendment was passed in CA in 2008 when Obama steamrolled McCain there. The one common thing of the 4 marriage losses in one night is that Romney was at the top of the ticket.
