Bob really needs a good endorsement, so I believe HuckPac will endorse him even though he will not officially announce.

My understanding is that because both Steve King and Christopher Rants are considering running for governor. Two people with considerable clout, Bob needs an early push to dis-sway the others from running and therefore the HuckPac announcement.

It's important that Iowa has a SINGLE candidate in the primary for Governor. Iowa needs to unite it's base and Bob is a conservative of all stripes. Rants usually backs us up on social issues and fights with us, but his interest is more on fiscal issues. Steve King is very strong on all party planks, but has made some controversial statements that will alienate some moderates.

Bob is the best bet in my opinion. On a side note, he gave me a nice thank you note for my donation I had made to him earlier.

Are you saying BVP is more temperamentally appealing to non_partisans -- kinda like Mike Huckabee?

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying. He is very Huckabee-ish in that sense.

Getting ready for the Huckabee/Vander Plaats fundraiser tomorrow. Big group of Huck's Army/Team Huck people going to volunteer. It's in the far northwestern part of the state, but we're making the road trip. Some are driving 6+ hours!

Will give a recap.

Just got Huck PAC email that said Huck will officially endorse Bob tomorrow.

Also learned that it should get great media coverage.

Sorry, the event was so exciting that we didn't get the blog address to you.

http://iowadefense.wordpress.com/

The enthusiasm of the crowd was electrifying. When Vander Plaats and Huckabee were on the stage together the feeling was that the success of the Vander Plaats campaign would be the opening to Huckabee 2012.

So much hunges on this election.

The event was amazing. It was a Wednesday afternoon in a remote part of our state (closest big citiy is 2-3 hours away) and almost 400 people showed up. The crowd was FIRED UP. We need a leader so badly, especially since our government and supreme court are dominated by liberals. Seeing Mike and Bob together gave the crowd real hope. The Vander Plaats campaign told me that they raised over $100,000 for the event with all the sponsorships and tickets. A couple of us went to talk to Huck after he spoke before he had to rush out the door for N. Carolina. When he saw our "Team Huck" shirts he took his focus off who he was talking to and looked at us and said "thank-you" about seven times. He gave me a great big bear hug! He will never forget that it is people like us who got him to where he is today, and this is another reason why I like Mike.

Enjoy the slide show of the event. I also included two pictures to highlight. First, the sign was made by Randy Davis. What an amazing artist! Second, anyone recognize the bumper sticker?

By the way, if anyone knows how to make this picture smaller.......please do it. It's HUGE!

53% of Iowans want a new Governor

From the Iowa Republic

http://theiowarepublican.com/home/2009/ ... -governor/

"While Governor Culver can wait until September before he is forced to deal with the state budget mess he created during his first term in office, doing so may cost the first-term Governor dearly at the ballot box next November. Despite being seen as likeable leader by those surveyed, Iowans are ready to give the reins of leadership to someone new."

Does not mention Bob Vander Plaats that I can see.

Bob Vander Plaats is officially announcing his bid for Iowa Governor on September 7. He just has an exploritory committee right now and has been focusing on raising money.

Also, it is almost certain that our retired moderate governor from 1983-1999, Terry Branstad, will be coming out of retirement to challenge Bob VP. The moderates will do anything to keep a Christian Conservative as being their standard bearer and Branstad is the only one who has the chance of beating Bob VP.

Stay tuned, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Code:
SIOUX CITY – Sioux City businessman Bob Vander Plaats, the 2006 Republican nominee for lieutenant governor who is leading the field for the party’s 2010 gubernatorial nomination, will officially launch his campaign on Monday, Sept. 7 in his hometown of Sheldon in northwest Iowa.

“Labor Day is the traditional start of the election season and Sheldon is the natural place for me to officially kick off the campaign.  Sheldon is where I learned the value of freedom and leadership. It’s where my parents, teachers and neighbors instilled a traditional Iowa work ethic in me.  And, it’s where I learned that the family is the foundation of society and it is government’s responsibility to foster a strong family instead of trying to replace it,” Vander Plaats said.

He continued, “The response we’ve seen since forming a campaign committee in January has been extraordinary.  Support is growing every day around the state, pushing us far out in front of the five other candidates in the Republican field.  Iowans of all political stripes recognize that Chet Culver is spending too much and demanding too little for taxpayers’ hard-earned money.  They know he has to go and that we need a governor whose core principles will be less government, lower taxes and higher quality. They’re rallying behind this campaign because they know I’ll be that governor.”

Vander Plaats’ announcement will be at noon on Labor Day at the City Park in Sheldon.  Vander Plaats will make a second appearance on Labor Day, visiting the Marlin Bontrager farm near Kalona.  Bontrager and his wife, Becky, own and manage a livestock and grain farm.  The couple and their 10 children have also formed the Bontrager Family Singers, a ministry that performs gospel/bluegrass music.

After growing up in Sheldon, Iowa, Vander Plaats pursued a career as an educator.  After attending Northwestern College in Orange City on a basketball scholarship, Vander Plaats taught at Boone and Jefferson-Scranton High schools. Earning his master's and specialist's degrees in the area of educational leadership from Drake University, Vander Plaats also served as principal at Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn and Sheldon High schools.

In 1996, Bob became president and chief executive officer of Opportunities Unlimited, a Sioux City health and human services organization that provides rehabilitative services for young adults with brain or spinal cord injuries or other life-altering disabilities.  In 2002, Bob led a positive and energetic campaign for governor. Though he narrowly lost in a three-way GOP primary, that campaign laid the foundation for a statewide organization that has continued to grow.  Vander Plaats also served as Iowa chairman for former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee’s 2008 presidential campaign.

Vander Plaats is currently president of MVP Leadership, Inc., which specializes in strategic vision and executive leadership for business and industry, economic development, education, health care, human services, and private foundations.

I am so pumped to be coming up a few weeks from the official kickoff of the campaign. I will not let the moderates win!

Iowans Rock,

Is there any sign that the business with the courts legalizing same sex marriage might have turned Iowans away from moderates & more towards conservatives?
