I was browsing the RP forums and came across a post that said that "sitemeter" which we use has incorporated "spyware".

Here is a post about it:

http://conservablogs.com/EricOdom/2007/ ... o-spyware/

http://www.darcynorman.net/2007/04/21/s ... e-removed/

Has anybody else looked into this?

Not sure if it would even be a big deal.

From Site Meter's Privacy Policy:

Quote:
General Internet User Privacy

In order to gather and aggregate statistical data for our customers, we may from time to time place persistent or temporary cookies on a visitor's hard drive when visiting a customer's website. These cookies are not capable of tracking, retaining, or storing any Personal Information, and they are used for no other reason than to gather the same general internet information that is available to all internet service providers, search engines, and websites. Examples of this information include, without limitation, a visitor's general location based on IP address, information from the visitor's browser such as browser type, type of operating system, keywords used while searching, websites visited, monitor resolution settings.

Site Meter may from time to time also authorize and facilitate the use of cookies from trusted third party business partners to gather and aggregate additional, anonymous, and non-Personal Information data from general internet visitors for the purpose of providing our customers with additional information about their viewing audience.

Site Meter does not gather, retain or store any data from these third party partners. Site Meter has also chosen to partner only with businesses that have shown a strong commitment to online privacy and have represented and warranted to Site Meter that any and all data collected on our behalf is non-Personal Information.

Site Meter does not condone, support, or participate in any activities that could potentially gather, retrieve or store any Personal Information about or from internet users.

I don't think it's a problem. They don't utilize cookies any more than other sites with advertising content.

It's not a problem. Alexa is the only one that I know utilizes some actual spyware...but it's still voluntary with them to download their toolbar. We're fine.
