14 endorsed candidates in Iowa and 10 of them won.
Seven of them were incumbents who all won huge. We sent Sen. Grassley and Congressmen King and Latham back to Washington. Our Secretary of Agriculture was re-elected and so was an Iowa House member. The other two were Iowa House members who did not have challengers.
Of the seven non-incumbents, none of them had a cake-walk race (six of them were trying to unseat a Democrat and one of them was trying to win a retiring Democrat's seat) but three still defied the odds. Of the losing candidates, two were candidates for the Iowa House, one was the Attorney General candidate, and the other one was the candidate for U.S. Congress who went up against Leornard Boswell. I would have loved it if we could have unseated Boswell and we did get withing 4% of doing that. I do not feel like we failed, however, because no Republican congressional challenger won here last night and we sent all three Democrat incumbent Congressmen back to Washington.
The three races we won were HUGE. One was for the Iowa Senate who unseated the very liberal Democrat who was also married to one of our Supreme Court judges. The other two wins were in the Iowa House where one took over a retiring Democrat's seat and the other one knocked of an entrenched Democrat incumbent whose rich family basically owns the district. This Democrat family is also huge donors to Terry Branstad and to other "Republican" organizations that "control" our statehouse. So, basically this Huck PAC candidate won by bringing down both the Democrats and the Republican establishment who was working against her because they got money from her opponent. And it was all grassroots, baby. She won by 150 votes.
The biggest news of the night came from the judicial retention vote. Three of the seven Iowa Supreme Court judges who legislated from the bench, executed from the bench, and amended the Constitution from the bench were up for retention and were soundly thrown out. This has never been done in Iowa. This was also a total backlash of not letting us vote on marriage. Former gubernatorial candidate and Huckabee's 2008 Iowa Chair, Bob Vander Plaats, led this effort. The funny twist of fate is that the Republican establishment ran former Governor Terry Branstad to take Bob out but what happened is that Bob is even more prominent of a leader now and has even got national name recognition out of it. This sits very, very, well for Huckabee 2012 because Bob is still 110% in his corner and really wants him to run. All of this has also lit a huge fire under the grassroots.
Our next mission is to pack Huckabee's Nov. 21 Iowa event with people so that he sees he needs to run. (This is one of Bob VP's missions). The Huckabee supporters here are just basically waiting for Huck to just say the word so they can be mobilized. I think national pundits would be shocked of how much of Huckabee's ground game is still intact here and has been busy helping other candidates until 2012 arrives.
