Those protesters are exactly one important reason EVERYBODY must get behind Gov. Huckabee and support him with all their might to become president. We have those anti-family, anti-Christian protesters here in Europe and often it gets ugly. Work, while we still can!

Santorum, Huckabee, protesters show at Cedar Falls forum

CEDAR FALLS | Republican presidential hopefuls Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee share many ideas.

But their messages at The Family Leadership Summit on Monday night in Cedar Falls were a study in contrasts.

“I didn’t come tonight to give you a speech. I came to sound the alarm,” Huckabee said. He fears the future of the nation is at stake in the 2016 election.

Huckabee announced earlier this month he's running for president again; he won the Iowa caucuses in 2008. Santorum, expected to join the race later this month, won in 2012.

Santorum, meanwhile, asked the crowd, “Ladies and gentlemen, aren’t you tired, just tired, of the bickering? Wouldn’t you like to see this country be able to work together again?” Santorum said, indicating he could unite people.

While he focused on seemingly bipartisan issues like education, the widening income gap and the breakdown of the American family, Huckabee focused on sounding those alarm bells at the potential loss of religious liberty.

Santorum said, "Family is the key, and what do we do here in America? We have policies that actually stop families from forming,” Santorum said, pointing to potentially well-intended laws that help single parents more than married couples with children.

Huckabee said the next president has to understand the people have more power than the United States Supreme Court.

“We are on the cusp of eradicating the long-held understanding that religious liberty is the foundation of all our liberties. … Without it, everything crumbles, and that is why the Founders made it the First Amendment,” Huckabee said. “It’s under threat today.”

The protesters outside Cedar Falls High School didn’t have the opportunity to engage the candidates, though The Family Leader — one of the sponsors of the event — tweeted a “sincere thanks” to the protesters for demonstrating. There was about an even number of protesters and attendees at the summit, put on by The Family Leader and Cedar Valley Patriots for Christ.

The protesters indicated they don't share The Family Leader’s definitions of family and love.

Jennifer Christiason of Cedar Falls, her parents visiting from upper Michigan, her husband arriving from work and her transgender son, Ben, all demonstrated against The Family Leader’s message.

“It’s for them to know that family values are actually very alive and well here in the Northeast Iowa corner, and we’re very proud to say that we feel that love is for all without limitations,” Christiason said.

Her father, Rell Spickerman, a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, said “Today, it’s a silent protest saying we’re standing on this side of love, behind, in our case, my grandson,” Spickerman said.

Ben Christiason, 17, a Cedar Falls High School student, said his message was simply that “wonderful people disagree” with the values The Family Leader espouses.

Huckabee praised the more than 100 protesters outside the summit. He said he doesn’t worry about protesters, but rather the day when they cannot rally outside an event, or when the 100-plus attendees at the summit wouldn’t be allowed to come in to listen people espousing their views.
