Two reportings from Huckabee-friendly sources:
Mike Huckabee doesn’t get a lot of time in the debates. When he took the stage on Saturday, he joked that the five minuets he gets to deliver his opening remarks of the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition Dinner were more than he got out of participating in CNN’s three-hour and twenty-minute debate last week. Huckabee was affable and repeatedly showed the qualities that helped him win the 2008 Iowa Caucuses.
While Huckabee’s talents were on display, it’s his prowess in communicating his position on core conservative issues that got everyone’s attention on Saturday night. When asked a question about defunding Planned Parenthood, Huckabee admitted that you would be hard pressed to find a Republican candidate that wouldn’t support that cause. He then challenged the rest of the field to join him in invoking the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the constitution to protect the life of the unborn.
Huckabee was interrupted with a standing ovation while he pushed for personhood legislation. He was also interrupted with a second standing ovation while giving a full-throated defense of the Second Amendment minutes later. Huckabee is flying under the radar in Iowa, but his performance on Saturday night is proof that, while the media may not be paying a lot of attention to his campaign, you would be foolish to write him off. More high-profile performances like that, along with his dogged campaigning and organizing across the state, and Huckabee’s numbers will be on the rise.
