‘Stuck on Huck’ message to Iowa conservatives: Stay true to Mike Huckabee

Until Mike Huckabee decides whether or not to engage in a bid for president, Iowans loyal to the Arkansas Republican are trying to keep passions burning with an off-the-official-grid campaign here.

A new “Stuck on Huck” online live radio show that airs tonight at 9 p.m., a new Facebook page, and a telephone campaign — created without the aid of anyone from the Huckabee camp — have one simple message: Don’t let any other candidate claim your heart, at least not yet.

As other potential conservative contenders roam Iowa’s presidential testing grounds and scoop up ace Iowa strategists for their campaigns, Huckabee fans began to feel anxious about the lack of organizing here for their guy. So they pulled out the four-year-old campaign lists and have so far contacted about 540 people who helped catapult Huckabee to a top finish in Iowa’s first-in-the-nation Republican caucuses in 2008.

“We’re just saying, ‘Don’t get caught up with the new girl in town, stay true to the girl you’ve been engaged to for two years,’” said Dave Davidson, 42, a Des Moines photographer. “He’s not blowing off Iowa. He’s got 50 states to think about.”

With just two visits to Iowa so far this year, Huckabee has been laying low — if hosting national talk shows on Fox News and ABC Radio and touring to sell a non-fiction book on politics can be called keeping a low profile.

Huckabee’s contract for his weekend political commentary TV program would be at risk of being suspended if he were to take official steps toward a presidential bid, a Fox News spokeswoman said. Fox in late February suspended the contracts of potential contenders Newt Gingrich of Georgia and Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.

“I’m sure he would want to keep that microphone as long as he can,” said fervent Huckabee supporter Randy Davis, 55, an Ottumwa chalk artist who does Bible-centered presentations at churches and schools.

Huckabee has consistently said he won’t make a decision until this summer about running for president in 2012.

“And that hasn’t changed,” said Hogan Gidley, executive director of HuckPAC.

Gidley said Iowa isn’t the only place where a friends of Huckabee are taking organizing matters into their own hands.

“I can assure you, if Governor Huckabee decides to run for president, he’ll have the legions of supporters and political allies in place, ready to hit the ground running,” he said.

Gidley added: “The media chose to discount Governor Huckabee’s grassroots support in the past — but the governor knows it’s that very grassroots network that won Iowa for him in 2008, and not high-paid political consultants.”

When two key Iowa advisers to Huckabee in 2008, Eric Woolson and Wes Enos, migrated to other candidates’ campaigns in recent weeks, it fueled speculation that Huckabee might not run or that his efforts here might be pinched.

“It doesn’t mean they’re anti-Huckabee. They’re just working,” said Davidson, who rode with Enos to a recent Bachmann appearance.

Huckabee’s 2008 state chairman, Republican Bob Vander Plaats of Sioux City, has resolved to stay neutral while his issue-advocacy group, the Family Leader, plays host to the full field of Republican contenders through a presidential lecture series.

The under-the-radar Huckabee movement has tried to keep him in the loop, he said.

“And I’m saying, guys, don’t send me this stuff,” Vander Plaats said with a laugh. “I don’t want to know this stuff. I’d like to have plausible deniability here.”

But by the time Huckabee makes a decision this summer, will members of Huckabee’s conservative Iowa base, who tend to be old-school, court-me-in-person caucus-goers, have already been scooped up by more frequent visitors such as Republicans Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and Herman Cain of Georgia?

To-the-bone Huckabee supporters like Barbie Miller, a retired nurse from Clive, have eyed some of the other contenders, but quickly dismissed them.

“Michele Bachmann, I think she’s a fine person, but I’m stuck on Huck,” said Miller, who did phone bank work for Huckabee in the 2008 cycle until he withdrew his name from the race. “When this country has Governor Huckabee as our president, our country will truly be blessed.”

Davis, who was Huckabee’s Wapello County chairman, said he has so far phoned or emailed 544 Iowans, mostly Huckabee’s former county chairs, precinct captains and miscellaneous volunteers.

“Of all the ones I’ve reached,” Davis said, “I can’t really think of one person that was a negative response,” although some said they’re sizing up other candidates, too.

To keep the home fires burning, Davidson and his brother, Dan, created Radio Stuck on Huck, which had its debut broadcast last week at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/stuckonhuck. The second show airs today at 9 p.m., and taxes and the tea party are the topic.

And Davidson has rekindled a 2008 blog, also called Stuck on Huck.

“We don’t have one leader,” he said of the grassroots movement. “We’re just cheerleaders.”

Huckabee first Iowa visit in 2011 was in February, partly for book signings. His book, “A Simple Government: Twelve Things We Really Need From Washington (and a Trillion That We Don’t!)” hit No. 5 on the New York Times’ hardcover nonfiction best sellers list in March, but has since dropped off the list.

Huckabee’s Fox News show, which airs on Saturday nights and is rebroadcast Sunday night, isn’t as popular as it once was, either. His show lost 20 percent of the key 25-year-old to 54-year-old demographic between March 2010 and March 2011, according to Nielsen Media Research. His total viewership declined 14 percent in the same period.

Huckabee was in last in Iowa in late March for a two-day political summit with conservative pastors called the Iowa Renewal Project, which also featured Bachman, Gingrich and Haley Barbour of Mississippi.

Davis said as long as Huckabee supporters are in limbo, waiting for a decision, he’ll keep campaigning on his candidate’s behalf.

“I realized when I started it that it could turn out to be a waste a time,” Davis said. “If he doesn’t run, people will say, ‘You wasted your time.’ But I just think it’s worth the risk.”

Gidley, in a separate interview, said: “Governor Huckabee is extremely encouraged by what volunteers like Randy Davis are hearing from past and new supporters and of course, the governor is deeply appreciative of all they’re doing nationally on the his behalf.”
