An exploritory committee makes sense. It is the next logical step and it allows him another round of media attention when he "formally" announces. That is why he would not want to jump "all in" right off the bat even though the exploritorty announcement will suspend his FOX gig.

An actual declaration of candidacy would throw away another round of free media down the road. It would also force full compliance of FEC regulations for disclosure of donors which is not required of an exploritory committee (they do have to tell IF the candidate ultimately declares).

Lastly, FOX's policy as I understand it with Newt and Santorum was to "suspend" for 60 days their contracts until they decided "formally" if they would run. Their flirtation was too obvious for the network to let their on-air value (which was combined far less than Mike's) risk FEC lawsuits. Mikes calculus for FOX was different. He and Sarah both were more coy and more valuable.

But now that he will be (presumptively) and exploritory cantidate they will likely simply "suspend" his contract for 60 days and not cancel it. Meaning he could go back to much of his on-air commentary for them if he doesn't run by...hmm...July 14. :)

The more information that comes out the more this looks like the standard candidate dance of the seven veils.

Haha...but...

my husband said, what if Huckabee wears a regular colored tie. Then at the commercial break switches to the purple tie for the last 5 minutes of the show.

That would really be pretty amazing. Cause I am sure that Fox News has heard many hints about the purple tie.

Assuming of course that he has heard about the urban myth of the Purple Tie.

That's no urban myth, Stephen, although it is the stuff that legends are made of!

You see it all started when a HA member, RedCentral, left a post on HuckPac asking Mike to wear a purple tie on his next broadcast if he had been selected as McCain's running mate...

Obviously that didn't happen (and now we're all GLAD!), but Mike did hear about the purple tie idea, and it has continued to play an important part in HA. Search "purple tie" in our search engine, and you can map out the whole story.

Intrade is reacting with their numbers by showing that Bachmann will announce a yes and Huckabee will announce a no.

A few principles to keep in mind:

1.) News leaked in advance diminishes excitement about the news itself (hence Rollins "hasn't been told."

2.) Hopes dashed tend to skyrocket much higher if the object of hope is realized after all soon after being dashed (hence Rollins "guesses he won't run.")

Those points lead me to believe that he plans to run. However, there is a third point:

3.) The suspense will build up huge viewing for his show tomorrow night, which he may consider important if he plans to endorse someone. (If he doesn't plan to run, and doesn't plan to endorse, then it doesn't seem Mike-like to build everything up like this.)

Overall, my guess is he's running. Mike knows human nature and how to get the most out of the media, and he's a political genius. If you think about it, he's been deliberately building momentum for the past several weeks. I believe tomorrow will be the climax and will kick off his campaign.

Should we have a poll on a new thread to see if people think he is going to announce that he is running, forming an exploratory committee, or not running?

We got the headline on Drudge!!!!!!!!!!!!

Purple tie, but not as great of a pic as they would have done for Romney.

The lingering question I have is how MH's not running would help him out financially. All of the pundits have repeatedly stated that he may not run because he's making such good money at his present job. I believe by not running he may be viewed as less relevant by the media decision makers. I would love to know what others think. Also, somebody posted that recently Janet seemed on board. Why would she change her mind suddenly in light of what seems a very favorable context for MH to achieve the nomination. If MH were to get the nomination and, God forbid, not win, then his value in the marketplace (as a commentator) would skyrocket it seems to this humble observer.

Well, I guess I was wrong about the urban myth of the Purple Tie.
