What do you make of this quote from Huckabee in the article?

Quote:
“I’m not completely devoid of understanding that probably the overwhelming majority of students here were not necessarily people voting in the republican primary this time,” Huckabee said in an interview with the News after the event. “But they were extremely kind and generous in their respect for me tonight.”

If one didn't know better it would almost sound like he was running for something himself.

I love how so many elite colleges have solid conservative student organizations and programs now. I really think things like this are going to help produce a generation of conservative leaders.

In the comment section on the article, the one commenter wrote, "I don't really want Huck to be President, but I'd be damned if he isn't the most likable and genuine figure in politics today. Reminds me of a far less lecherous and far less brilliant Bill Clinton."

Huckabee is the only national political figure who isn't totally dismissed by the opposition. So at a time when we need national unity, I still wonder why he won't put himself forward for the voters' consideration.

They waste, they wither worse; they as they run
Or bring more or more blazon man’s distress.
And I not help. Nor word now of success:
All is from wreck, here, there, to rescue one—
Work which to see scarce so much as begun
Makes welcome death, does dear forgetfulness.
Or what is else? There is your world within.
There rid the dragons, root out there the sin.
Your will is law in that small commonweal…

I think he is just commenting on the generosity and kindness in which he was received, even though they most likely completely disagree with him. Nothing more, nothing less.

It certainly doesn't help that the most vocal members of his own party constantly attack him and/or tries to dismiss him. If he used inflammatory language and ranted like a lunatic - then, he'd ironically get less internal opposition.

Here is another article with a couple of nice pictures from this event.

http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/2011/sep/19/huckabee-talks-morality-government/

Here are a couple of quotes from the article:

Quote:
Regardless of their political background, students interviewed after the talk said they enjoyed Huckabee’s affability and appreciated his respectful attitude towards other points of view. Though Lizzie Hylton ’15 said she is an active Democrat, she also called Huckabee one of her favorite politicians.

“He very much sticks to his moral and religious beliefs,” Hylton said.

Elizabeth Henry ’14 said that she is an “evangelical-Christian” like Huckabee and that she is grateful to the Buckley program for bringing in speakers whose beliefs do not reflect the overall views of the student population.

At the end of the program, Huckabee told the News he was impressed with the turnout and the level of student engagement at the event.

Quote:
Zelinksy said Huckabee was a perfect candidate to jump-start the organization’s speaker series because of his broad name recognition and appeal to people of all beliefs.

“He also represents a certain brand of conservatism that I think students may not give a fair shake on campus,” Zelinsky added.
